Wheat weaving is an ancient harvest tradition, where stalks of grain were shaped into intricate forms to honor the spirit of the land and bring blessings for the year ahead. Today, it’s both a beautiful folk art and a meditative, hands-on practice.
Household talismans have been around since… well… humans made households to protect themselves, their families, and friends from saber-toothed tigers and other wild beasts. This season, we invite you to join what we hope will become a holiday tradition of gathering together to weave folk talismans inspired by Northern European harvest customs—a perfect way to close the year in good company!
In this all-levels class, we’ll start the morning with simple beginner-friendly techniques, break for lunch, then move into more advanced patterns in the afternoon. You’ll leave with your own woven creations and fresh inspiration for carrying this timeless craft forward. These pieces also make meaningful, one-of-a-kind holiday gifts.
Theresa will bring wheat and lavender for you to weave your magic, and we at Tyee will have a cozy room in which you may be inspired.
Please bring scissors, a towel, and a heavy weight (like a sadiron or brick) or find a rock when you get here! Also, bring your own lunch; light refreshments will be available.
We can’t wait to weave with you.
